Science Fair: The Mesozoic Era

My Grade 2 Science Fair Project

For Science Fair, my project is about the animals that lived during the Mesozoic Era, 252 million to 66 million years ago. The Mesozoic Era was divided into the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous time periods. The dinosours lived during the Mesozoic era, but so did:

• flying reptiles
• marine reptiles
• some mammals
• insects
• fish

My Mom and I made a really big poster with dinosaurs, marine reptiles and flying reptiles. We made a game using some of my toys and another poster. You have to match the toy to the animal's skeleton and its name. I also brought in my fossil collection and let people hold them.

Extinction and Living Fossils

There was a major extinction before the dinosaurs after the Permian era. The dinosaurs became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous time period. Some of the dinosaurs evolved into modern day birds. Some kinds animals that are alive today existed even before the time of the dinosaurs, like sharks, crocodiles, and the coelacanth. The earth has gone through a lot of changes, and a lot of plants and animals die when the changes are big enough. New species are old species that have changed over a really long period of time.
